Shopping on platforms like Shein and Temu “is irresponsible,” accuses the CEO of Fnac-Darty
Enrique Martinez is sounding the alarm about these retail giants, "who are putting our fellow citizens at risk." He is calling on them to consume wisely.
Faced with the flood of small parcels from Asia, the tone is rising and the competition is getting annoyed. French consumers are addicted to Shein and Temu , to the point that 30% of parcels delivered today come from these platforms, recalls Enrique Martinez on RMC this Tuesday. The CEO of the Fnac-Darty group even believes that "there is an urgency" to put an end to the hegemony of these brands that sell low-cost products, "putting the lives of our fellow citizens in danger."
Because the risk is twofold, he believes. The first is health-related, as "these platforms circumvent the laws by bringing billions of products into Europe that do not meet the standards" in force. "We have lost 30 years of quality" that had been "gained by standards, controls and all the requirements on products," says the boss.
The second is financial "for all the traders who contribute to a social and economic model based on employment, taxes and social contributions and are directly threatened by these platforms which have colossal resources . " "There will be no going back for many traders, who will close their doors and not reopen," warns Enrique Martinez, according to whom a few months are enough to have devastating effects on the local French economy.
"Is this what we want? Do we want ghost towns, where all the shops will disappear? Who will finance our social system?" the leader then pretended to ask, before calling for "more responsible consumption." The author of the book "What if we consumed better?" published in April is convinced that the French do not need these platforms to have access to affordable, low-cost supplies and live happily.
The act of purchasing there "is irresponsible," he says. The proof, he says, is the initial effects of this unfair competition on the French market "in terms of sales volumes." "We're not talking about a small phenomenon, we're talking about the world's biggest retail giants completely ignoring the laws," he finally rages.
